I was in denial for a while, for my persona is a human girl with dog ears + tail, but I have drawn furries and was actually antagonizing over to create a fursona. I have come to terms with the fact I'm most likely a furry, I've been called it by friends who've seen my art. It was just a human girl with the ears and tail but they classified it as "furry", but when I asked them what they thought the girls with cat ears and tail were called, they said "neko" or "cat-girl", like it was a separate thing from furries. But the only difference was my persona was a dog and not a cat?  ?? I just got tired of explaining and went with the being-alled-a-furry thing. Either way, my friends don't seem to mind, but some of them have the stereotypical view of furries; butt-buddies, sex-maniacs, freaks who dingle their dangle with every fangle that jangles. They think I'm "different" from "those furries", but I really just want to tell them that most of the fandom is "like me". They're all very friendly and welcoming, and yeah there's /that kind of art/ out there, but there's also really neat clean art out there as well! tl;dr denied furry status for 2 years, friends are like aight, some have a skewed view of the fandom tho |

The truth behind it all, every friend group has that one furry friend.
If you don't know who it is, odds are you're the furry friend.
I was apparently born with some mythical power and I've converted a lot of my friends to the furry side.
It was an interesting thing to witness.

I've been a furry since god knows when. Maybe middle school? I'm pretty sure it was middle school (i just had no idea about it at the time). Either way, back in my junior year of high school like 3 of my friends started calling me a furry. I was actually really pissed when they did because yanno 'how dare they?!?!'
So the first time I go to our GSA club meeting the president of the club asks if anyone has anything to say and I blurt out like the idiot I was back then "DON'T CALL ME A FURRY!!!" The room was dead silent except for the few friends that were calling me a furry in the first place. Yanno they were sayin it was a joke and that i was taking it too seriously (which I was).
So yeah I was in denial of being a furry for a good long time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

idk how long i've been saying im a furry but i know i've been into the stuff since i was like 12(shrugs)
i could care less who really knows because a lot of my closest friends online are furries. and the ones i know irl dont care because i'm not the kind who goes into public places like WWHO WANTS TO SEE ME DRAW THE ULTIMATE MMOTHERFUCKGING YIFF !!! (yes i am)
(also i never really understood the whole use of the term 'coming out/come out' in reference to furries/bronies bc like?? you come out as lgbtq because thats something huge in your life. it feels kinda out of place considering the circumstances)

ah whoops i didn't mean to get anyone a slap on the wrist;;
but really if you just take the time to explain furries it's easier to get friends to understand. people usually judge because what they know about furries is usually scraped up from cesspools of online forums and see it as an incredibly sexual fandom. while yes, the sexual part of the fandom exists, it's not the largest part. though if you're trying to explain this to family i would probably leave the sexual part out entirely. you can talk about how it's just a hobby where you draw/write/make music about animal people. it's no different than someone who's into making cartoons.
